Printing GS1 Barcodes Accurately and Reliably
With the next generation of GS1 barcodes, printing requirements are also increasing. Small code areas, variable data, and reliable machine readability require a clean, high-contrast print image.
BOWA offers high-performance inkjet inks for GS1 2D codes, GS1 DataMatrix, and other variable markings. Tailored to your packaging material, your printing system, and your production speed.
Ready for Tomorrow’s Labeling
GS1 2D Codes: Get Ready for 2027 Today
Product labeling is undergoing a transformation. By the end of 2027, point-of-sale systems worldwide are expected to be capable of processing GS1-compliant 2D codes. This will enable companies to provide significantly more information within a single code than is possible with traditional linear barcodes.
For manufacturers, this means one thing above all: the quality of labeling will become even more important. After all, additional data only provides a benefit if the code can be reliably read throughout production, logistics, and retail.
BOWA supports you with the right inkjet inks to help you prepare your labeling early on for the increasing requirements of 2D codes.
More information. More possibilities.
GS1 Digital Link Opens Up New Possibilities
With GS1 Digital Link, a 2D code can not only carry product data but also provide access to digital information. For example, manufacturers can provide additional details on ingredients, origin, recycling, or product services.
Manage Processes More Efficiently
Variable data such as batch number, best-by date, or serial number can be embedded directly in the code and processed automatically.
Improve Traceability
Products can be identified more clearly and tracked reliably throughout production, logistics, and retail.
Prepared for Future Demands
With GS1 2D codes, you can prepare your labeling early on to meet the growing demands of the retail sector and the supply chain.
Precision Makes the Difference
The Right Ink for GS1 2D Codes
To ensure that GS1 2D codes can be reliably read, a clean, high-contrast, and consistently stable print image is required. Precise contours and consistent print quality are especially critical for small DataMatrix structures.
BOWA specifically tailors the ink to the packaging material, printing system, and production speed. This results in a solution that reliably integrates into your process and lays the foundation for reliable machine readability.
Right for Your Application
Printing GS1 2D codes on various types of packaging
Every surface behaves differently. Folding cartons , labels, films, and plastics all have different requirements for adhesion, drying, and contrast.
To ensure that the GS1 2D code remains reliably readable, we tailor the ink specifically to your application.
The result: An ink solution that fits your production line and delivers a clean, high-contrast print image.
Test first. Then produce with confidence.
Check the GS1 2D code on your actual material
Whether it’s a label, film, cardboard, or plastic: The actual print quality is evident on the material that will ultimately be used.
Send us your packaging sample and the requirements for your production line. We’ll test the appropriate ink for print quality, adhesion, and drying time and recommend a suitable solution.

Frequently Asked Questions About GS1 Barcodes
What is a GS1 2D code?
A GS1 2D code is a two-dimensional barcode that can store significantly more information than a traditional EAN/UPC barcode. In addition to the GTIN, it can store information such as lot numbers, best-by or expiration dates, and serial numbers.
What changes will be made to the GS1 barcode in 2027?
The industry’s goal is for point-of-sale systems worldwide to be able to read and process GS1-compliant 2D codes in addition to existing linear barcodes by the end of 2027. It is therefore in manufacturers’ best interest to prepare their printing and labeling processes for the new requirements early on.
Will the classic EAN barcode be phased out in 2027?
No. The EAN/UPC barcode will not automatically disappear at the end of 2027 and can continue to be used and scanned even after that. The new 2D codes expand the existing possibilities.
What is the difference between GS1 DataMatrix and a QR code with GS1 Digital Link?
The GS1 DataMatrix is primarily used for standardized product and supply chain data. QR codes with GS1 Digital Link can also contain GS1 data and, in addition, link directly to web-based information. Which option is appropriate depends on the specific application.
